WCI Steel has raised the June base price of flat-rolled steel products according to an announcement on its web site. This is an unusual move for the Warren, Ohio-based steelmaker, which is more of a player in the longer-term contract market and typically doesn’t announce spot pricing. The firm wants $1,000/ton on deliveries of hot-rolled sheet in June; $1,100 for cold-rolled sheet and $1,120 for hot-dipped galvanized sheet. Earlier this week, Nucor of Charlotte and AK Steel of West Chester, Ohio, made cost-surcharge adjustments that essentially put their June hot-rolled sheet prices at $1,000. Their steel price hike announcements cited “unprecedented growth in scrap and other input costs” as the key drivers behind the increases.
