It appears that e-procurement is finally realizing its potential. Across the country, MRO buying operations are using e-procurement tools that streamline internal processes, allowing purchasing to be more strategic. Once free of the paper, buyers are concentrating more on such activities as leveraging MRO purchases and consolidating supply bases. E-procurement systems are providing many buyers with data they've long coveted: Who is buying what from where. With the new spend data they can approach suppliers for better pricing and improved service levels across national, and in some cases, global organizations. In turn, improved relationships with suppliers can provide far-reaching benefits through continuous improvement activities. In the stories that follow, PURCHASING Magazine takes a look at how MRO buyers at Sony Electronics, Whirlpool and Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railroad are better managing their company's maintenance repair and operations purchasing with use of e-procurement tools.
