IFF emphasizes social responsibility in low-cost country sourcing

There is no shortage of talk about corporate social responsibility lately, especially as it applies to working with low-cost and emerging country suppliers.

"We are a socially-responsible company, so we encourage our suppliers to be good partners in their communities, too," says IFF's Gladys Gabriel. "Since we deal with so many emerging and low-cost countries, they usually don't have huge incomes for those communities, so we encourage our suppliers to support specific projects in those communities."

In fact, as much as possible during the selection process, IFF tries to favor suppliers that have already implemented social responsibility initiatives in their communities. "If they haven't done this, we may be able to help them get started," she adds.

Then, over time, it tries to validate what the suppliers are doing in this area. "We want to make sure they truly are supporting the communities," says Gabriel. In addition, as part of its audit program, IFF makes sure supplier plants are meeting local standards for safety and environmental programs.
