Major U.S. airlines now have failed twice in two weeks to raise prices through fuel surcharge increases as fears mount that the U.S. economy is on the verge of recession. Reuters reports that American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines Inc, Continental Airlines, Northwest Airlines and US Airways Group all rolled back the latest round of increases, which had been an attempt to double the domestic fuel surcharge to $40 per round-trip fare.
This has happened last month as well, as Purchasing.com reported, so the major airlines actually have retreated from hefty fuel surcharge increases four times in two months. "It's basically failed,” says Rick Seaney of fare tracker FareCompare.com in discussing the latest increase. "It doesn't surprise me at all with all the economic bad news the last few days."
