David Hannon, News and Transportation Editor -- Purchasing, 7/17/2003 2:00:00 AM

Inbound logistics is beginning to get the technology it deserves. A recent report from ARC Advisory Services in Dedham, Mass. found that a growing number of companies are beginning to put more emphasis on their inbound transportation when implementing a transportation management system (TMS) at their organization. The report found that 20% of TMS revenues in 2002 came from inbound-focused implementations.

"The economic environment and competitive landscape are forcing companies to find new ways to reduce costs and improve productivity," explains ARC's Adrian Gonzalez, author of the report. "And taking greater control of your inbound processes is the low hanging fruit."

The report forecasts 11.6% growth for the TMS market over the next five years, expanding from $860 million in 2002 to over $1.5 billion in 2007. Gonzalez says the competition in the TMS market will intensify as providers with broader footprints, as well as third party logistics providers, place a stronger emphasis on this market.
