Intel has shipped one billion flash memory chips

Intel say it took the company 12 years to ship one billion flash memory chips, but surging demand will result in the next billion being shipped in two years.
Demand is growing for flash manufacturers of cellular telephones, MP3 players, digital cameras and a variety of other devices. Intel is the leading manufacturer of flash chips, followed closely by AMD. Flash is on allocation, but Intel and other manufacturers say they are adding capacity.
Intel introduced the first flash memory in 1988 with the goal of enabling new products that could benefit from the technology's unique char-acteristics: Flash memory chips store information when a device is powered off, providing a small, rugged, mobile and low-power digital alternative to disk drives, magnetic tape and film.
Flash memory is used in a variety of products including mobile phones, hand-held PC organizers, voice recorders and tapeless answering machines. It's also used in such industrial products as network routers and cockpit voice recorders.
