Mini-mills, led by North Star Steel and Nucor, are seeking a $15/ton hike in market tags for merchant bars in flat, angle, and channel configurations. Merchant bars started to fall under the weight of imports in fourth-quarter 1998, and were selling for just $280/ton in first-quarter 1999. A North Star spokesman says strengthening demand for these products should support the latest pricing action.
