Avnet has launched a new business unit devoted to the high brightness illumination products market, including light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
Avnet’s LightSpeed business unit will sell illumination products for interior/exterior architecture, specialty lighting, traffic control, channel letters, large format signage as well as medical, dental and clinical systems. Cary Escow, a 26-year veteran of Avnet was named director of the new business unit.
High brightness illumination is not a new area of business for Avnet, but it is the first time Avnet has had a specialized unit for illumination products.
The unit will distribute LEDs and high performance analog and optical/electromechanical products. In addition, the unit will offer technical expertise on illumination products from dedicated engineers who Avnet calls “illumineers.” The engineers are experienced in LED technology, thermal management, power drivers and secondary optics.
The global LED market will grow from $3.9 billion in 2005 to $8.3 billion in 2010, says researcher Strategies Unlimited.
