GE Plastics, the engineering plastics unit of General Electric, won't join the online marketplace being set up by rivals. Rather, GE Plastics is comfortable with its own e-commerce platform, which has been operating in the U.S. since late 1998 and in Europe since April, according to corporate e-commerce chief Matthew Espe. "We own all of it and we're doing it alone," he says.
basf, Bayer, Celanese, Dow Chemicals and DuPont plan to launch a joint electronic marketplace for thermoplastics in October. GE Plastics specializes in engineering plastics used in products ranging from car interiors and external panels to communications and electronics equipment casings.
