Merck's Willie Deese has continued his rise in the pharmaceutical industry, being named president of Merck's manufacturing division recently. Deese joined Merck as senior vice president of global procurement, in January 2004, after nearly three decades of experience as an executive and manager for several pharmaceutical, health care and high technology companies, including GlaxoSmithKline, SmithKline Beecham, Kaiser Permanente. and Digital Equipment Corp. In making the announcement, Merck's president and CEO Richard Clark said, "Merck, and the Merck Manufacturing Division, are fortunate to have an experienced and dynamic leader of Willie's caliber as we focus our energy on the execution of a new manufacturing strategy that will improve our operating efficiency, establish faster and more streamlined processes for introducing new products, and enhance long-term shareholder value. His background in manufacturing and procurement, his extensive health care industry knowledge and his skill at leading broad-based change initiatives make him well suited for this new assignment."

Northrop Grumman has named Eric Howell vice president, contracts, pricing and procurement for the company's Information Technology sector. In this role, Howell now manages and provides policy direction for the sector's contracts, pricing and procurement functions. In addition, he manages proposal reviews, coordinates contract-related activities and oversees the e-procurement system. Howell reports to Mark Gagen, the sector's vice president and CFO. Howell was previously director of contracts and pricing at Northrop Grumman's corporate office in Los Angeles and senior corporate counsel for contracts and major programs for Northrop Grumman.

Whirlpool recently named Brian Hancock as its vice president in charge of supply chain, North America. Hancock will report to John Anderson, senior vice president, North American Operations. Hancock comes to Whirlpool from Schneider Logistics where he was most recently vice president and general manager responsible for the Supply Chain Management business unit serving automotive, electronics, manufacturing and retail industries. Before joining Schneider in 1997, Hancock held leadership positions in finance and planning with Honeywell and Tredegar Molder Products.

Levitz Home Furnishings of Woodbury, N.Y. has appointed two new executives to its senior staff in new positions. Hemant Kalbag was named senior vice president for strategic sourcing and direct import operations at the furniture retailer and Shishir Agarwal was named senior vice president of supply chain.

The First American Corporation, the nation's largest data provider, promoted Jodee L. Barnett to the newly created position of vice president of national procurement. She is now responsible for standardizing the company's procurement practices to maximize buying power and reduce operating costs. Barnett brings to the company 20 years of experience in procurement, sales and marketing to this new role. In 1996, she joined First American and held a leadership role within the company's Mortgage Information Services Group in Dallas for nine years, where she led a centralized procurement department and pioneered an IT asset management program. In November 2004, Barnett relocated to California to accept a position as national procurement director for First American Title Insurance Company, a subsidiary for First American.

Ford has named Armando Ojeda its new director of supplier diversity development. Ojeda, former president and CEO of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce replaces Renaldo Jensen, who is retiring after a 27-year career with Ford. Prior to joining the U.S. Hispanic Chamber, Ojeda was executive director of the Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a trade association that services 300 Hispanic-owned businesses and publicly traded companies. Ojeda was also vice president of prevention, safety and health for Levi Strauss & Co. in San Francisco. Tony Brown, senior vice president of global purchasing at Ford, said Ojeda's in-depth knowledge of issues affecting minority suppliers in the domestic auto industry will help advance Ford's successful supplier diversity development program.

Richard J. Poulton, senior vice president of strategic sourcing and CPO at UAL Corp., parent company of United Airlines, has some new responsibilities. He now holds the position of senior vice president of business development and reports to Glenn Tilton, United's CEO and president. Poulton will take on additional enterprise-wide responsibility for IT and business development. His expanded duties include corporate development activities, technology infrastructure, continuous improvement programs and strategic sourcing. Poulton also was president of UAL Loyalty Services and served in United's finance organization.

Mike Rosberg has joined Brunswick Boat Group (BBG) in Knoxville, Tenn., as vice president of supply chain, reporting to the president, Dustan E. McCoy. Rosberg's responsibilities include heading strategic sourcing organization and the logistics operations. Rosberg joins BBG after 10 years with Maytag, where he was the vice president of national procurement, and 16 years at Deere and Co.
