Special Materials Co. (SMC) and Changshu Xinhua Chemicals Co. have completed an expansion at the sodium hypophosphite (SHP) line at their joint venture Changshu New-tech Chemicals Co. facility in China.
The capacity expansion, now fully operational, will increase capacity by 50% at the ISO-9001:2000 registered plant to 5,000 metric tons/year. Derivatives capacity is increased as well. The expansion has also enabled the company to achieve significant improvements in finished product quality.
"This expansion, the third since we started in 2002, gives us the platform to continue to grow and serve our global customers, while satisfying our own internal demand for SHP," says Mark Silver, president of SMC.
Changshu New-tech Chemicals is a joint venture founded in 2002 between SMC and Changshu Xinhua Chemicals.
Changshu New-tech Chemicals produces SHP, hypophosphorous acid and its salts, THPS, and other phosphonium compounds.
SMC, based in Delaware, is a global marketer, producer and developer of specialty chemical products. The company has offices in Cherry Hill, N.J., New York, Hanover, Germany, and Nanjing, China.
In addition, SMC has 14 warehouse locations in North America, three in Europe and controlling interest in two Chinese joint venture manufacturing operations.
The 10-year-old company has eight different chemical businesses. The phosphorus derivatives business—which is its original line of chemicals—offers a complete line of P4 derived products from reducing agents to fire retardants. SCM also has the capability to custom produce specialized organo-phosphorus molecules.
Its phosphorous derivative products are produced in SMC's Joint Venture factory, Changshu New-Tech Chemicals in Changshu, Jiangsu, China.
