Keep an eye on Surface Transportation Board vote on proposed merger of Canadian National Railway Co. and Illinois Central Corp. STB vote usually determines how government will respond to rail mergers. Merged railroad would create first major North American railway, stretching across Canada, through central U.S. and into Mexico. Some shippers and competitive railroads oppose merger, saying it would stifle competition. STB vote is scheduled for later this month.
