Port security came into focus on July 1 when the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code went into effect as the first-ever multilateral ship and port security standards. The code provides guidelines to ports on security assessments, developing security plans and hiring adequate security personnel.
Early in July several ships were turned away from U.S. ports for failing to have the correct security documentation in place, delaying shipments. But for the most part, the new rules did not cause major disruptions.
In addition to the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code, U.S. vessels, maritime facilities and ports around the country were required to submit security assessments to the U.S. Coast Guard as part of the domestic Maritime Transportation Security Act. The Coast Guard is implementing various improvements at individual ports as needed.
