Sales prices for domestic and import carbon steel plate in coil dropped to $610/ton in April, according to Purchasing estimates, forcing steel mills to reduce rolling schedules. The price is 49.75% lower than the August 2008 peak, when mills were operating at full capacity and commanding record prices of an average of $1,214. So far this year, carbon steel plate prices are averaging $736/ton, down from $1,004 for all of 2008 and just slightly higher than the $717 average of 2007. Carbon steel mills are reporting a lack of customer demand for plate—rolled and cut to length—from such major markets as service centers, plate processors and other users.
