Alcoa names top 10 suppliers

Alcoa's Materials Management business has named its top 10 scrap processors for 2008 chosen from required criteria of quality, volume and performance.
The winners are: American Iron and Metal of Montreal, Quebec; David J. Joseph Co. of Cincinnati; Metal Conversion of Mansfield, Ohio; Newco Metals of Pendleton, Ind.; Omnisource Corp. of Fort Wayne, Ind.; Service Aluminum Corp. of Ellicott City, Md.; Shapiro Sales of St. Louis; Smelter Service Corp. of Mount Pleasant, Tenn.; State Metal Industries of Camden, N.J.; Weiner Iron and Metal of Pottsville, Pa.; Schupan and Sons of Kalamazoo, Mich., was selected as Most Improved 2008 Supplier.
"This elite group of suppliers work closely with us in understanding each others needs and objectives to improve the scrap quality and processes within the Alcoa plants," says Kevin Anton, president of Alcoa Materials Management in a statement.
"Our metrics are to continue to increase our annual scrap buying, without lowering or compromising our strict quality, safety and environmental standards. We work closely with our strategic scrap suppliers through our annual and formula—based pricing and scrap buying programs," says Anton. Criteria for selecting candidates include scrap volume, scrap value and savings to Alcoa, scrap quality, proximity to Alcoa plants, dealer growth and improving scrap product, the number of Alcoa plants supplied, timely delivery, dealer safety programs, environmental compliance and ISO 9000.
