BNSF Railway Co., a subsidiary of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp., will reduce the "free time" for container storage at its Memphis intermodal facility, to one day effective May 1. This new policy means customers can store containers at the BNSF yard free of charge for 24 hours. After that, each container will cost them $150/day.
BNSF also said it was spending $100 million to increase its capacity in California this year, in response to increased demand for container shipping from Asia.
Expansions include a $26 million buildout of a parking and stacking capacity at the Hobart intermodal facility in Los Angeles, a $16 million track expansion of its main line near East Barstow, and a $9 million expansion of parking capacity at BNSF's San Bernardino intermodal facility.
