Fujitsu wants to sell its hard-disk-drive business

There could be fewer hard drive suppliers if Toshiba is successful in its plans to buy the hard-disk-drive operations of rival Fujitsu.
If it acquires Fujitsu's hard drive business in the deal that would be worth $340-350 million, Toshiba would own about 33% of the worldwide market of 2.5-inch drives.
The Japanese newspaper The Nikkei says Toshiba wants to buy Fujitsu's hard-drive manufacturing and sales networks, including two hard-drive plants, one in Thailand and one in the Philippines. Both Toshiba and Fujitsu build 2.5-inch hard drives that are used primarily in laptop computers and car-navigations systems.
With the global economic downturn, Fujitsu has failed to be cost competitive and has lost share to rivals. It is looking to focus more on its IT consulting business. Fujitsu says it is in talks with multiple parties concerning its hard-disk-drive business.
