The average price of a NAND flash member chip plummeted 63% in 2008 and contributed to the global flash memory market declining by nearly 15% last year, according to researcher DRAMeXchange.
Overall, revenue of flash suppliers dropped from $13.2 billion in 2007 to $11.4 billion last year, the researcher says. The revenue decline occurred even though NAND bit shipments increased 117% in 2008. While that seems like a lot, NAND bit shipments increased 117% in 2007 and 151% in 2006.
NAND prices declined significantly last year because of intense competition among NAND suppliers for market share combining with excess supply due to overcapacity.
Several NAND suppliers increased their market share in 2008, while Hynix saw its share decline. Samsung, the largest NAND supplier, saw its market share stay flat last year.
NAND suppliers grow market share
Supplier Market share 2007 2008
Samsung 40% 40%
Toshiba 25% 28%
Micron 6.1% 7.9%
Intel 3.7% 5.8%.
Hynix 19.2% 15.1%
