  • DSP board market to grow to $760 million by 2008

    Staff -- Purchasing, 3/18/2004 2:00:00 AM

The worldwide merchant market for digital processing boards will rise from about $559.7 billion in 2003 to $760 million in 2008, according to Venture Development Corp.

Slot cards comprise the largest dollar volume and unit volume shipments and will have a 5% compound annual growth rate ( CAGR ). Mezzanine/daughter cards and plug-in cards, which use RISC processors, will have a 9% CAGR . Most of these are used in versa modular eurocard (VME)-based multiprocessing systems, particularly aimed at the military/aerospace and medical imaging market segments. Other platforms such as PC/104 family and standalone DSP boards will have 11.8% CAGR.

While digital signal processing is growing at a high rate, this has not translated into the embedded merchant board space. Projected growth rates are expected to remain in the mid-single digits for the foreseeable future.

The real growth in DSP is in deeply embedded applications, with boards that are customer and end-product specific. While these provide opportunities for silicon suppliers and contract manufacturing houses, products using these boards are not designed to accept merchant boards.
