  • What's Hot

David Hannon, News and Transportation Editor -- Purchasing, 11/4/2004 2:00:00 AM

Capacity was the hot issue at the Council of Logistics Management meeting in Philadelphia recently. The overall message: shippers need capacity and carriers are working to provide it, particularly internationally (read: China, where by some counts there is a lack of about 400,000 logistics managers and professionals).

Most logistics service providers reported having very strong years financially so far, while shippers packed any and all CLM sessions on sourcing, transportation and cost reduction strategies for global shipping. Length of service contracts are reportedly on the rise, as shippers look to secure capacity in key lanes for the foreseeable future. Several that had difficult years in the recent past reported the market "coming back in a big way" in 2004.

On the technology front, optimization tools are the order of the day, as shippers look to do more with less by letting algorithms find the most efficient modes and lane combinations. RFID technology sessions were also popular.
