The first recipients of the R. Gene Richter Scholarship Program were announced at the opening dinner for the Achieving Procurement Excellence conference, organized by the R. Gene and Nancy D. Richter Foundation.
The scholarships were established in memory of R. Gene Richter, a longtime procurement executive, multiple winner of the PURCHASING magazine Medal of Professional Excellence and member of the Purchasing magazine editorial advisory board who died last year. It is the first national scholarship program for undergraduate students studying supply chain management.
This year's scholarship recipients include Michigan State University students Michelle Jackson, Linsey Vasilenko and Shawn Shackleford, and Arizona State University students Jami Coop, Andrea Vack and Leslie Waggoner. Each will receive $5,000 in tuition assistance, along with internship opportunities, mentoring programs and networking opportunities.
"The Richter scholarship is specifically designed to develop future leaders in the procurement profession, a complex function that Gene helped transform into a strategic discipline that smart companies use to help them win in the marketplace," said Theresa Metty, senior vice president and chief procurement officer for Motorola. "The scholarship program is our way of extending Gene's legacy of innovation and leadership by providing opportunities for gifted students to excel in a field that he recognized would become even more essential to business success in a global economy."
Richter Foundation president Nancy D. Richter said in 2005 the foundation plans to award eight scholarships and within five years it hopes to go global through partnerships with the Institute for Supply Management and the International Federation of Purchasing and Materials Management.
