    WHAT IT MEANS: According to Big Brown, air products declined 6.4% and ground volume decreased 2.8%. "Based on economic forecasts, we anticipate a challenging environment for a number of quarters going forward," said Kurt Kuehn, UPS' CFO.

    After spiraling up this summer on record-high fuel costs, transportation costs are heading down fast, say buyers in Purchasing's monthly survey.

    WHAT IT MEANS: Through the first nine months of 2008, container traffic at Seattle was down 11.2%, as global economies have slowed. However, export traffic at the smaller port of Tacoma has increased as the value of the dollar pushed more exports.
