Penske Logistics is getting high praise from the automotive industry these days. First, the company was named 2003 Supplier of the Year by General Motors. "Penske Logistics is representative of the type of company we want to grow with as we drive to be the best worldwide," said Bo Andersson, vice president, GM worldwide purchasing production control and logistics. Ford Motor Co. later presented two awards to Penske Logistics, marking the first time Ford presented two Q1 awards to a supplier at one time. Penske has been serving as the lead logistics provider for Ford's inbound supply chain since 1999. Dennis Connor, Ford's director of purchasing and Grant Belanger, executive director of material planning and logistics, said Penske's solution has streamlined Ford's inbound network and increased visibility of supplies down to the part level, while significantly reducing inventory and lowering Ford's transportation and freight costs.

Chrysler Group is honoring two suppliers and three employees for their efforts in diversity supplier development. Shipping giant United Parcel Service was recognized as Chrysler Group's Supplier of the Year for almost doubling Chrysler's goal in its use of minority suppliers. Also Flex-N-Gate, a supplier of exterior trim and plastic, metal and mechanical assemblies, was recognized as the Minority Business Enterprise Supplier of the Year.

Internally, Chrysler recognized three buyers for their work in supplier diversity. Donald Fergle of the International Procurement Services organization was recognized as Buyer of the Year for his work, including the creation of a minority supplier resource list for use by his suppliers. Marvin Washington of the Exterior Trim Procurement group was named Purchasing Agent of the Year for helping the Exterior Trim team achieve 12.3% compliance in minority supplier content for 2003. And Ed Sprock of Chrysler's Logistics organization, was named Director of the Year for developing a minority supplier plan that resulted in a 100% participation by logistics carriers in 2003.

Lockheed Martin has agreed to "mentor" Custom Manufacturing and Engineering, a small woman-owned business, in the development of an imaging sensor system product line. The agreement is part of a U.S. Department of Defense initiative that encourages large companies to share technical expertise and knowledge of government contracting with minority and women-owned small businesses.

Delta Air Lines recently recognized several business partners and employees for excellence in supplier and sourcing leadership. Jet Parts Engineering was honored as Small Business of the Year for its consistent track record in providing on-time deliveries of aircraft parts and for cost-savings efforts. Star Awards were also given to two Delta employees for innovation and commitment in sourcing to small, minority-owned and women-owned businesses. Allen Greer was named Sourcing Professional of the Year and Reg Holden was named Manager of the Year for Delta's Supply Chain Management organization. Delta presented its annual Global Sourcing Award to employees Caroline Norman and James Padilla. Both were recognized for their leadership in the development of sourcing strategies and capabilities that drove collective benefits and created value for Delta and its alliance partners.

PPG Industries recently bestowed its Excellent Supplier Award on J.B. Hunt Transport Services' Dedicated Contract Services operating segment, which participated in PPG's Supplier Added Value Effort program to reduce expenses and improve processes in 2003.

Contract manufacturing firm Pemstar recently received its second Supplier Performance Award from network solutions provider Ciena Corp. Criteria for the award include flexibility and responsiveness, quality, teamwork and customer service as well as overall supplier performance.
