Look for lower NOR flash prices

Electronics buyers can expect to see downward price pressure on NOR flash memory chips. Samsung Electronics, the top memory IC maker in the world, earlier this year announced it would compete broadly in the NOR flash memory market.
The company says it wants to become the top NOR flash memory manufacturer in a few years. It will compete head to head with Intel, Spansion and STMicroelectronics. Samsung is already the leading supplier of NAND flash memory.
This is good news for NOR memory buyers as it means there will be competitive pricing on NOR flash since manufactures fight for market share.
While the NOR flash memory market has been eclipsed by the NAND market, NOR is expected to grew from about $8.3 billion in 2006 to about $9.8 billion in 2008, according to market researcher IC Insights.
Samsung has actually made NOR flash for awhile, but only supplied it to a few of its largest customers who requested the devices. Now the chip company will supply a wide range of NOR flash parts ranging from 16 megabit to 512 megabit densities.
NOR flash is used in a variety of equipment for code storage.
