J & L Structural Steel Inc., Aliquippa, Pa., has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The firm plans to continue full production of lightweight steel structural sections at three facilities in Beaver County, Pa., but does plan to divest its Brighton Electric Steel Casting division in Beaver Falls, Pa.
Service center Atlas Steel Products Co. has completed an expansion in Twinsburg, Ohio, ahead of schedule and is capable of delivering heat- and corrosion-resistant metals, including aluminized and stainless steel, from its new multi-cut blanking line.
Service center giant Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. of Los Angeles has purchased the assets and business of the Aircraft Division of United Alloys in Vernon, Calif. The acquired firm will operate as a unit of Reliance's Service Steel Aerospace subsidiary headquartered in Tacoma, Wash.
Steel distribution company Pitt-Des Moines Inc. of Woodlands, Texas, has hired financial adviser Tanner & Co. of New York to help explore strategic options, including a possible sale of the 108-year-old company. Pitt-Des Moines distributes and provides value-added processing for a full line of heavy carbon steel products through eight steel service centers and three culvert pipe facilities. The company's heavy-construction business designs and builds tanks and systems for liquid and low-temperature cryogenic storage, fabricates steel bridges, fabricates and erects steel structures for buildings and designs and builds water storage systems.
Woodings Industrial of Mars, Pa., has signed an exclusive distribution agreement to market copper castings for metal-smelting equipment MRO from Peel Jones Copper Products of England.
