Machine-tool demand totaled $8.6 billion in 1997, a 24% advance over 1996 ($6.94 billion). Demand is expected to rise again in 1998, according to the latest forecast by the American Machine Tool Distributors' Association and the Association for Manufacturing Technology. Machine tools are used to shape or to cut metal.
