  • Energy, energy security to be priority in Bush speech

By Purchasing Staff -- Purchasing, 1/23/2007 1:36:00 PM

“Energy and energy security” are policy areas that are of “foremost concern for Americans” and will get prominent attention in President Bush's State of the Union address tonight, White House spokesman Tony Snow told reporters Monday.  Oilgram News says Bush’s State of the Union speech is expected to support renewable fuels, including ethanol, to reduce U.S. reliance on foreign sources of oil. He also is expected to discuss reducing U.S. usage of gasoline in motor vehicles, perhaps through higher fuel economy standards. Snow wouldn’t disclose specifics of the president's plan, but reiterated that the speech would not include mandatory carbon caps to address global climate change. "There has been some talk about, sort of, binding economy-wide carbon caps in the speech, but they are not part of the President's proposal," Snow said, according to an official transcript of his press briefing reported by Oilgram News. But, he did say Bush's proposals would address “in a comprehensive and realistic way concerns about greenhouse emissions, and also their primary sources.”
