Solectron acquires facilities from SONY Corp.

Sony and Solectron have inked a new outsourcing agreement under which Solectron will acquire two sony manufacturing facilities and build a wide range of products for the electronics OEM.

Solectron will acquire assets of manufacturing facilities in Japan and Taiwan. The facilities make high-end consumer products such as automobile satellite navigation systems, car audio systems and lithium-ion battery packs. Combined, the facilities have about 490,000 square feet of manufacturing space.

Solectron will integrate the two facilities into its global network and offer employment to all affected sony employees. The contract manufacturer will provide manufacturing services to sony and other customers.

The deal will help establish a strong, full-service presence in Japan and Taiwan, two countries important to the world's electronics industry. Solectron also gains a foothold into the high-end consumer electronics products market.
