The computer industry is still the largest consumer of integrated circuits, accounting for about 50% of the chip market in 2004, says market researcher IC Insights.
That's twice the size of the communications IC market and almost four times the consumer IC market. The consumer IC segment market share in 2004 will be 13%, the same as it was 16 years ago. It is overhyped as a user of semiconductors, says Bill McClean, president, IC Insights.
The only chip segments that will have higher sales in 2004, compared to four years ago are the communications and automotive IC markets, says IC Insights. Communications semiconductor revenue increased to $44.6 billion in 2004 from $41.5 billion in 2000, while automotive ICs revenue increased more than 30% to $11.5 billion in 2004, up from $8.7 billion in 2000.
