In an effort to focus on the fast-growing LCD market, electronics distributor Jaco Electronics recently sold most of its electronics components business to WPG Americas, a subsidiary of WPG Holdings of Taiwan.
"We sold everything, but the LCD component business," says Joel Girsky, chairman, president and CEO of Jaco, based in Hauppauge, N.Y. Jaco is now a distributor and integrator of liquid crystal displays (LCD) and embedded computer solutions and related components, he says.
Girsky says Jaco now carries display products from Advantech, AU Optronics, ELO/Tyco, Hitachi, Kyocera, NEC, Samsung, Sharp and 3M. Jaco also has a display integration center housing its engineering and manufacturing staff and operations. The integration center offers LCD value-added solutions.
Girsky says Jaco's display operations have been the fastest growing and most profitable part of Jaco's business. He says Jaco's LCD business grew about 20-25% annually over the last seven years.
Jaco specializes in commercial and industrial applications, kiosks and digital signage, and focuses on the aerospace, financial services, defense contracting, security, transportation, medical, gaming industries.
Jaco decided to sell off the components business because with so much manufacturing moving to low-cost countries, it was hard to make a profit in the U.S.
"It was obvious to me that I could extricate myself from the components business we would have a viable public corporate selling embedded solutions, doing value add, distributing pieces of LCD glass, or inverters or touch screens or single board computers here in the U.S.," says Girsky.
