Shipping giant DHL recently launched a new online international shipping resource for estimating duties, taxes and other customs-related charges. The new Trade Automation Service (TAS) provides trade and customs data covering more than 64 countries that are responsible for 95% of the world's trade. Specific tools include: landed-cost calculator, product compliance, comparative landing costs, restricted party screening and interactive classification.
Con-Way Transportation Services plans to allocate $181 million this year to purchase additional highway tractors, trailers, forklifts and on-service center development to accommodate growth at its four regional companies. That amounts is more than double the $90 million previously planned for capital expenditures, but strong growth triggered by a vigorous economy in North America and continued consolidation in the LTL trucking industry has spurred the larger levels of spending. The figure also includes start-up equipment for the Con-Way Truckload operation that will open in the first quarter of 2005. Con-Way's Southern Express operating company recently began operations in a new Memphis, Tenn. service center that will allow the company to triple its freight handling capacity.
Billings Freight Systems announced a major restructuring of the company that includes opening a new truckload division. The 81 year old LTL carrier in Lexington, N.C. has formed a new holding company, Billings Transportation Group, to provide support services for three individual business units: Billings Freight, which will continue to serve its existing territory in the Southeast and Northeast, Billings Express, which includes the former Beeline Division as well as a new Truckload Division and Billings Logistics Services and lastly BFS Global.
Roadway Express now offers time-critical multi-day window service, which guarantees delivery within any size delivery window specified by the customer.
