Prepare for China RoHS

While the deadline to meet the European Union Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) legislation has passed, the impact of the legislation is still being felt, according to the president of Newark InOne.
Speaking at the distributor’s recent RoHS Supplier Summit, Paul Tallentire said RoHS effects on the U.S. marketplace may go on for years. "To be cost-effective, manufacturers and distributors need to be able to consolidate their product lines. But in the absence of federal regulation, we face running dual production lines and overstocking to satisfy both compliant and noncompliant needs in this country," he said.
While the EU RoHS deadline has passed, component manufacturers and distributors have a new environmental deadline to meet.
China’s RoHS legislation goes into effect in March and the law has strict labeling and testing requirements that are different than the EU law, according to Jeff Shafer, Newark InOne’s senior vice president, product. He said manufacturers and distributors have to prepare for the new requirements if they want to sell in China.
Among the companies attending the summit were:
Alpha Wire, Amphenol, Avago Technologies, AVX, Belden Cable, Bourns, Honeywell, International Rectifier, Kemet, Lambda Electronics, Microchip, Molex, Ohmite, Omron, Texas Instruments, Tyco Electronics and Vishay.
