  • Electronics systems shipments will decline in '09

By James Carbone -- Purchasing, 2/12/2009 2:00:00 AM

The global economic downturn means fewer computers, cell phones and consumer electronics equipment will ship for the first time since 2002.

Revenue from global electronic equipment production will fall 3.2% in 2009 and the decline in shipments of equipment will result in a 16% decline in semiconductor revenue, according to researcher Gartner.

Electronics systems shipments will drop from $1.4 trillion in 2008 to $1.3 trillion in 2009, reflecting the decline in unit shipments of computers, cell phones, consumer electronics ands other electronics systems. It will be the first time since 2002 that systems revenue declined. As a result if fewer systems shipments, semiconductor revenue will fall from $261 billion to $219 billion.

PC shipments will be down 5%, cell phones, 10% and consumer electronics equipment shipments will decline 15%.

Gartner says a 5% decline in PC shipments will translate into 1.66% drop in chip revenue. A 10% decline in cell phones shipments will result in a 1.94% drop in semiconductor sales and a 15% drop in consumer electronics will mean chip revenue will drop 1.73%.
