  • Index nudges up 0.1 point to 94.3

    By Staff -- Purchasing, 8/13/1998 6:00:00 AM

Purchasing's index of industrial chemical prices inched up only slightly to 94.3 in July, because rising tags for titanium dioxide and caustic soda offset declining olefins prices. Rutile-grade titanium dioxide prices continue to strengthen, rising to an average of 97(cent)/lb for contracts and 96(cent)/lb on the spot market in July. These prices are forecast to climb to $1.01/lb for contracts and 97(cent)/lb for spot purchases in six months.

Rayon-grade caustic soda prices also jumped in July, climbing to an average of $288/ton for contracts and $265/ton for spot purchases. Buyers expect these prices to remain steady through year-end.

Olefin tags continue to decline. The index of aliphatic prices fell 0.9 to 72.0 in July and is forecast to drop to an average of 70.3 in January.
