World crude steel production in July dropped 1.6% from June but remained 6.2% ahead of the year-ago month, according to the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) in Brussels. For the year-to-date, raw steel output has increased 6.1% to 815 million metric tons. July production of 117.2 million metric tons was down 1.6% from 119 million in June as China's production dropped by 4.4%, reflecting the industrial slowdown as the country prepared to host the Summer Olympics in August. However, the tonnage outpaced the 109.9 million metric tons of last July. Also, world steel production by the 66 nations polled is on pace to reach 1.39 billion metric tons in 2008, which would be ahead of the earlier IISI prediction of 6.7% annual growth to 1.28 billion metric tons.
