  • Lead Free Update

    Staff -- Purchasing, 12/9/2004 2:00:00 AM

    Compliance data

Avnet is offering component data that will help OEMs and electronics manufacturing services providers comply with European legislation than bans the use of lead and other hazardous substance beginning in 2006.

Under an agreement with i2 Technologies, Avnet Electronics Marketing Americas will offer its customers i2's hazardous materials content data that is designed to help OEM and EMS providers measure and understand their current and future compliance to RoHS legislation.

The content will be offered behind a customer's firewall or as a hosted solution via Avnet's Promiere Component Selector or BOM Optimizer.

Suppliers have been designing components to meet RoHS requirements, but the information that they communicate about their products' substances vary widely. i2's data shows which components comply with RoHS.

    Lead-free webcast

Looking for the latest information on lead-free components? Check out Purchasing Magazine's webcast, "Electronics Buyers: Get Ready for Lead-free." The 45-minute webcast features two leading electronics industry executives discussing the impact that the Restriction on the Use of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) initiative has on the supply chain. Dan Shea, chief technology officer at electronics manufacturing services (EMS) provider Celestica, discusses what the lead ban means to the EMS industry. Glenn Bassett, vice president of business development for Avnet, talks about how RoHS affects the distribution industry. The webcast is free and is available at www.purchasing.com/leadfree.

    Lead-free websites

Buyers looking for information about lead-free components can check out the websites of distributors such as Arrow, Avnet and TTI among others. As the July 2006 deadline approaches distributors are posting data about which parts are lead-free, as well as information about the Restriction on the Use of Hazardous Substances law and what it will take to be in compliance.
