Who's got strategic sourcing on the brain?

Canadian mining firm Placer Dome says its strategic sourcing efforts for tires, cyanide, explosives and fuels and lubricants are expected to result in estimated total savings of $15 million over the next three years. Placer Dome is now actively pursuing potential opportunities for savings in other consumables.

The U.S. Air Force's Information Technology Commodity Council, "stretched Air Force buying power for laptop and desktop computers by $10 million throughout the last year," according to a recent statement. The Council was established after a review of acquisition data from across the Air Force by a procurement transformation team. The review team determined that the service was buying thousands of similar items individually worldwide. The team adapted a common industry practice for Air Force use by creating the Air Force commodity council process.
