    CAREER TURNS focuses on issues of professional development and change within the procurement field—or is it the purchasing field?

    Mary Walker is a purchasing agent for Hagemeyer North America. She is also a past president of the ISM Dallas chapter and a longtime proponent of professional education in the purchasing industry.

    BACK TO SCHOOL is a blog focusing on academic and professional development in the supply chain and procurement fields.

    Richard G. Weissman, C.P.M., has more than twenty-five years of experience in all facets of procurement and supply chain management. He has held positions with large business units of Fortune 500 companies, medium sized contract manufacturing companies, small venture backed Internet startup firms, and third-party procurement, consulting, and strategic sourcing firms. A practitioner turned educator, Rich is a frequent lecturer and author on supply chain related business topics. He also teaches undergraduate and graduate level business courses in purchasing, operations management, and business strategy and policy. Rich holds an MS in Management from Lesley University and a BA in Economics from Rutgers University. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Institute for Supply Management’s Materials Management Group and has published two self-study courses, Managing and Improving Supplier Performance and Project Management for Purchasing Professionals, for the ISM. Rich is a past president of the Purchasing Management Association of Boston and the 2003 recipient of the Harry J. Graham Memorial Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Association.

    SERVICES FIRST focuses on (but is not limited to) strategies for buying services and contracting with services providers. 

    Ray Mazzoleni is the corporate purchasing manager, services at Genzyme Corp. He has extensive purchasing and contracts management experience working with start up and Fortune 500 organizations in high tech and service industries, including: Lotus Development Corp., Iron Mountain Records Management and the Thomson Corp.

    Ray has developed and managed corporate purchasing functions, established programs to meet cost reduction objectives and implemented systems to increase operational efficiency. He has also been active in purchasing education serving as an adjunct professor at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell and authoring a self-study course, “Achieving Success in Purchasing.” Ray is a lifetime Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.) through the Institute of Supply Management (ISM) and has served on the Board of Directors of the Purchasing Management Association of Boston (PMAB), New Hampshire and the New England Minority Purchasing Council. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Michael’s College.

    Walter E. BuczynskiC.P.M., CPCM has over 30 (3 years in China) years of key leadership roles with large and medium size corporations. His responsibilities covered eProcurement, Corporate Procurement, Operations, Materials, Manufacturing, Strategic Planning, Logistics, Supplier Quality Assurance and Information Systems Implementation.He has successfully implemented new Strategic Sourcing activities, Purchasing Card, and Supplier Alliance programs. Walter recently served as the Chairman of the International Purchasing Organization Conference in Shanghai China, August 2006, and has provided Supply Chain internal seminars to senior managers in China at Nokia, Emerson, Motorola, Bristol/Myer/Squibb, and Daimler/Chrysler. He teaches C.P.M Certification seminars throughout mainland China.

    His accomplishments include articles and commentary in national publications.He continues to teach professional development courses while affiliated with the Institute of Supply Management (formerly the National Association of Purchasing Management-NAPM), and has conducted many seminars and courses for the American Production Inventory Control Society (APICS), University of Southern California Los Angeles, and the University of California, Hayward. Mr. Buczynski is recognized as a subject matter expert in Strategic Sourcing, Internet Purchasing Systems, Negotiations, Procurement contracts and Purchasing Card programs.He has managed his consulting practice for supply chain improvement programs and software tools selection.

    Robert J. (Bob) Garino is director of commodities for the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., ISRI represents more than 1,400 companies that process, broker and consume such scrap commodities as metals, paper, plastics, glass, rubber, electronics and textiles. Bob has a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from Monmouth University and has worked in market research, strategic planning and metal and non-metallic commodities research for Commodities Research Unit, Inco, NL Industries and the National Association of Recycling Industries that merged with the Institute of Scrap Iron and Steel to form ISRI in 1987.
