  • Travel costs in Asia Pacific region to rise 5.6%

American Express Business Travel releases forecast in Shanghai this week

By Susan Avery -- Purchasing, 10/29/2008 6:47:00 PM

The cost of an average domestic trip in the Japan, Asia Pacific and Australia  region will increase 5.6% in 2009, according to the American Express Business Travel Forecast and Trends report for the region. Costs for an average international trip in the region will rise by the same percentage figure. American Express Business Travel released the new report at its China Business Travel Forum in Shanghai this week.

A closer look at the report finds airfare in the region for a domestic/short-haul economy class trip will increase 2% to 4%. An international/long-haul business-class trip will rise 5% to 7%.

On the hotel side, rates for mid-range properties will grow 8% to 12%, while upper-range rates will also climb 8% to 13%.

American Express Business Travel released its global Business Travel Forecast and Trends report last week in New York, in which the company stated that travel costs will not change significantly next year. Costs of a domestic trip will rise an average 2.8% while an international trip will cost 4.3% more in 2009.
