  • Toyota plans to expand North American production

By Dave Hannon -- Purchasing, 1/11/2007 2:26:00 PM

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America plans to expand its production capacity by 33% by the end of 2008. According to a statement released this week, by 2008, Toyota will have the annual capacity to build about two million cars and trucks in 15 plants across North America. Toyota's investment in North America is currently valued at more than $17.6 billion.

A separate Bloomberg story said that Toyota may build as many as five more assembly plants in North America in the next decade, which would give Toyota 12 in North America, about the same number Ford Motor Co. will have after its current round of closings. Bloomberg cites unnamed sources in the company as saying Toyota will build at least one factory in the southeastern U.S. and one in Mexico.

Toyota says its subsidiary, Bodine Aluminum's Jackson, Tennessee plant will increase capacity to build one million engine blocks and 270,000 cast aluminum transmission cases and housings.
