Distributors go global

One distributor that had strong global growth was Arrow Electronics, based in Melville, N.Y. “Our global revenue was the highest sales revenue ever at $13.6 billion, up 22% from 2005. It was a great year for us,” says Michael Long, president of Arrow Global Components. “We have been growing annually at a rate of 17% per year for the last four years.”
Passives and interconnect specialist TTI, based in Dallas, also had strong global sales in 2006. "Europe has been a smashing success for TTI," says Craig Conrad, senior vice president and chief marketing and strategic planning officer. "We have grown sales from $80 million in $225 million this past year."
He says TTI has 20 locations in Europe and has been averaging 30% per year annual growth there and is the fastest growing distributor in Europe. "We are the number two or three pan-European distributor for IP&E sales,” he says.
TTI has a smaller presence in Asia, but expects its sales to grow. "We are such a small player in Asia," says Conrad. “There are unlimited opportunities there.” He says TTI is in India and will expand to Vietnam.
Asia and Europe are opportunities for Nu Horizons, a semiconductor distributor based in Melville, NY. “We have eight sales offices in mainland China and Hong Kong and another sales office in Taiwan and we intend to open a distribution center in Hong Kong,” says Dave Bowers, president of Nu Horizons. “Currently we service the market from Singapore.”
He says he expects Nu Horizons to have high double-digit growth in China.
The distributor also expects strong growth in Europe. It recently acquired DT Electronics in the United Kingdom. As a result, Nu Horizons is expecting “tremendous” growth in Europe, says Bowers. “We will grow faster in Asia than North America,” he says.
More electronics distributors are reporting strong revenue growth from OEM and electronics manufacturing services (EMS) providers in Asia and Europe, according to Purchasing magazine’s annual survey of the Top 75 electronics distributors. The survey found that global sales of the Top 75 increased 17.2% to $45.1 billion in 2006.
