Oregon Steel Mills has expanded supply of structural steel tube by operating the equipment of the former LTV Tubular Products facility in Portland. The facility, now known as Columbia Structural Tubing, is only a mile from Oregon Steel's main mill and is making rectangular hollow structural steel sections in sizes ranging up to 10 inches.
The plant's coil-slitting line is among the largest in the western U.S., capable of slitting steel up to 0.625 inches thick and 110 inches wide. Columbia Structural Tubing also has an in-line painting process, which will produce mechanically cleaned, degreased and pre-primed coated tubing. It is marketing a range of structural tubing to buyers in the Pacific Northwest, Northern California, Montana, Idaho, Utah and British Columbia,
"The acquisition of these assets provides additional downstream opportunities for our coiled flat-rolled product and will provide our Northwest-region customers with locally produced quality tubing," says Jim Declusin, Oregon Steel's president. The plant has annual capacity of about 150,000 tons produced and shipped.
