  • LCD monitor panel prices rise as demand in China increases

Unclear if increase means a recovery for the LCD industry.

By Jim Carbone -- Purchasing, 4/9/2009 6:01:00 PM

Prices for liquid crystal display (LCD) monitor panels are rising, apparently due to an increase in demand from China, according to researcher iSuppli.

Average pricing for most of monitor panels and small-sized television panels increased in a range from $2 to $3 in March compared to February. For instance, the price of a 19-inch WXGA panel increased from $58 in February to $61 in March, according to iSuppli. The price should rise to $63 in May, according to the researcher.

Prices increased because of an “an influx of rush orders coming from the domestic Chinese market, driven by the impact of China’s rural consumer stimulus program,” says Sweta Dash, director of LCD research for iSuppli.

She says the price increase also resulted from rising orders from brands and retailers. Inventories of LCD panels have been at lower-than-normal levels since the end of 2008. There is some replenishment of those inventories.

iSuppli say it is too early to say there is a recovery occurring in the LCD industry. Dash says the rush orders are not likely to be sustained in May and there is no indication of a strong overall rebound in end equipment demand.
