While many U.S., European and Japanese OEMs have shifted manufacturing to China, there is evidence that Chinese-owned OEMs are producing more of their own electronic equipment in their homeland.
Of 22 electronic product categories, Chinese equipment makers held the number-one ranking for unit shipments in 14 categories, according to a report by researcher iSuppli. The Chinese OEMs already dominate most consumer electronics markets in China and are gaining prominence in other product areas, including mobile communications.
Domestic Chinese OEMs in 2003 were the top producers in China of ADSL modems, air conditioners, central-office switches, desktop PCs, television set-top boxes, entry-level servers, microwave ovens, MP3 players, notebook PCs, refrigerators, telephones, televisions, USB flash drives and washing machines, according to iSuppli. Foreign OEMs led in CRT monitors, digital still cameras, mobile phones, ink-jet printers, laser printers, LCD monitors, dot-matrix printers and mobile-communications base stations.
Large Chinese OEMs appear to be handling the bulk of manufacturing.
The top five OEMs' collective shares increased in 2003 in most markets compared to 2002. In printers, microwave ovens, central office switches, USB flash units, TVs, ADSL modems and monitors, the top five OEMs controlled more than 80% of market share in 2003. In the printer, microwave oven and USB flash markets, the top OEM commanded a more than 40% market share.
