A ChemCentral plant in Kansas City exploded around 2:15 this afternoon. According to a Reuters report, “Witnesses said the ensuing fire produced towering flames and a plume of black smoke visible across the region.”
According to an employee quoted in a Kansas City Star report, the fire was sparked by a stationary chemical tank full of mineral spirits. And there were nine people in the area at the time. He thinks they are all accounted for, but he’s not sure.
In an Associated Press report, Dan Brennan, an attorney for Bedford Park, Ill.-based Chem Central, said it was not immediately clear what caused the explosions at the plant, which has 15 to 20 workers.
