PC shipments rise nearly 14% in third quarter

Global PC shipments increased 13.8% in the third quarter compared to the third quarter of 2006, according to researcher iSuppli.
PC shipments totaled 68.1 million units in the third quarter, up 59.9 million from the same period in 2006. Shipments were also up 11.1% from 61.3 million in the second quarter of 2007.
The notebook segment continued to drive the expansion of the overall PC market, with year-over-year growth of 33.5%. However, desktop PC shipments increased 3.4% to 39 million, compared to 37.7 million in the third quarter of 2006. iSuppli’s latest worldwide PC forecast calls for unit growth of 12% in 2007.
Hewlett-Packard Co. remained the top PC company in the third quarter. HP shipped 13.1 million PCs, a 32.7% and 3.2 million unit increase from 9.9 million in the third quarter of 2006.
HP’s market share expanded to 19.2% in the third quarter, up from 18.3% in the second quarter and from 16.5% in the third quarter of 2006.
This marked the fifth straight quarter that U.S.-based Hewlett-Packard occupied the No.-1 spot in the global PC market.
Dell’s unit shipments grew just 1.5% to 9.9 million PCs. Dell’s share was 14.6% in the third quarter.
