North American Stainless has opened its new No. 4 hot annealing and pickling line for hot-rolled stainless steel sheet in coil, one of the largest units of its type in the world. The new line at the Ghent, Ky., plants has rolling capacity of more than 1.2 million tons annually.
TW Metals of Exton, Pa., has acquired Stainless Tubular Products of Fairfield, N.J., a distributor of stainless steel round, square and rectangular tubing; pipe and fittings. The company will operate as STP under the leadership of Jim Goldsmith, general manager, who will report to Bill Schmid, regional vice president of TW Metals.
Feralloy Wheeling Specialty Processing, a processor of carbon steel products in Wheeling, W.Va., has been closed by co-owners Reliance Steel & Aluminum and Severstal North America.
Macsteel Service Centers USA has opened a new 100,000-square-foot service center in Portland, Ore., which will service the Pacific Northwest states of Oregon, Washington and Idaho. The service center will process and stock carbon, stainless and aluminum flat rolled and wide flange beams.
West Irving Die Casting closed its plants in Owensboro, Ky., and Sandwich, Ill., on December 31 and is liquidating the facilities and property to pay back existing debts. The company made die-cast aluminum parts for the automotive market.
Adex Mining has halted further development of its Mount Pleasant tin-indium-zinc project in New Brunswick, until metal prices rebound. The property also contains copper.
Anglo-Belgian zinc producer Nyrstar, the world's biggest, has entered a five-year deal with Swiss-based raw materials supplier Glencore to distribute commodity-grade zinc and lead metal.
Thresher Industries, a producer of aluminum and metal matrix composite alloy castings in Hanford, Calif., has purchased two new high pressure die casting machines, which are expected to boost 2009 sales by $15 million. The metal parts will be marketed to a wide range of end-user companies.
Russel Metals, the Mississauga, Ontario-based steel processor and distributor, has completed its purchase of Norton Metal Products, a metals service center in Fort Worth, Texas.
ArcelorMittal USA Inc., Chicago, will close steel finishing operations in Lackawanna, N.Y., and Hennepin, Ill., resulting in the layoff of more than 500 workers. It cited continuing problems associated with the failing global economy. Both plants are marked for permanent shutdown.
U.S. Steel has idled temporarily its Granite City Works, Granite City, Ill.; the Great Lakes Works in Ecorse, Mich., and its Keetac iron ore mining facility in Keewatin, Minn.
Cleveland-based steel distributor Monarch Steel has increased slitting capacity at its Decatur, Ala., service center by adding a line capable of cutting cold-rolled and galvanized sheet.
Ferrous metal powder producer Hoeganaes will close industrial operations in Cinnaminson, N.J., by the end of February as a result of the economic downturn. Its headquarters and research and development activities will remain at the facility, however. company has other manufacturing facilities in Ridgway and Milton, Pa.; Gallatin, Tenn.; Buzau, Romania, and Huckeswagen, Germany.
