Cirrus Design Corp., maker of FAA-certified small aircraft in Duluth, Minn., holds quarterly supplier workshops where purchasing discusses supplier development and outlines performance enhancement objectives. The company has a major strategic alliance for MRO items with one supplier that performs dock-to-stock service, handling more than 3,000 items per day on a just-in-time basis. Other value added services provided by MRO suppliers to Cirrus include suggestions of high-quality alternative products that reduce cost. Nancy Verhel, supply chain specialist, takes a total cost of ownership (TCO) approach to buying decisions, like that suggested by Tim Underhill in the accompanying story. Verhel, a member of PURCHASING's MRO All Star Buy team for 2003, details her company's strategy during MRO Symposium, a new virtual conference, moderated by the editors of PURCHASING.
