Tucson, Ariz.-based copper company Asarco temporarily shut its rod and cake plants in Amarillo, Texas in March and is planning periodic slowdowns at its copper refineries in Amarillo and Hayden, Ariz., as a response to a very depressed copper market. "These measures have been necessary to bring production and inventory into line with sales," Asarco CEO Joseph Lapinsky said in a statement.
