Ethanol plants are popping up in the U.S. faster than corn pops in a microwave. Kansas City-based Alternative Energy Sources (no web site) will be building 110,000 gallons/year plants in Illinois and Iowa. Alternative Energy Sources also is acquiring Flex Fuels USA, an Alabama-based company that is developing cellulosic ethanol technology that uses waste materials, rather than corn or sugar, to produce the fuel additive. Meanwhile, on the West Coast, Pacific Ethanol soon will be constructing three more corn-based ethanol plants in two Western states. When combined with its existing plant sites in Madera, Calif., and Boardman, Ore., the firm’s total annual capacity will be 220 million gallons.
